Deputy PM expects "fair play" from EU

Spain and Italy will be the first to ratify the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) with Serbia, says Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic. He added that the foreign minister of Belgium, which is taking over the EU presidency, had stated that Serbia’s candidacy would likely be reviewed in September. Deputy PM expects "fair play" from EU “I believe that it will certainly be during the Belgian presidency, by the end of the year, and it’s up to us to do everything we can so it would happen as soon as possible,” Djelic was quoted as saying by Belgrade daily Vecernje Novosti. According to the deputy premier, 2014 as the deadline for accession of the entire Western Balkans was "not realistic due to the (economic) crisis", but he says "2020 cannot be considered either, although some western diplomats have often been mentioning it lately". Djelic stated that the European integrations and the status of Kosovo were two separate processes "according to the EU's official policy". “We've made it very clear that it's in Serbia's interest to join the EU, but that we won't do that at any cost and certainly not at the cost of losing a part of our territory. After all, the EU member states are not united regarding the issue of Kosovo and Metohija's status,“ he explained. The deputy PM said that Serbia wanted the opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to “be a reason for the beginning of negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina in order to reach a compromise“. The top UN court is expected to give its advisory opinion on the legality under international law of the Kosovo Albanian unilateral declaration, which has been rejected by Serbia. “An increasing number of officials in the countries which have recognized Kosovo are asking, though so far informally, about a possible solution which would be acceptable to Belgrade. We must keep our cool, continue to carry out a balanced policy which is obviously causing nervousness in certain circles that are not inclined towards us,“ he was quoted as saying. When asked if Belgrade would, and under which circumstances, agree to a partition of Kosovo, Djelic replied that "such an idea is not being considered". Bozidar Djelic (Beta)
