Hague: Šešelj abusing privileges

The Hague Tribunal Secretariat has imposed limitations on communication between Vojislav Seselj and his legal advisers. Seselj’s communication with his legal team will be monitored for the next 30 days by detention unit officials, after the Hague Tribunal’s Secretariat deemed that Seselj had been abusing the privileged status he received as a result of defending himself. Hague: Seselj abusing privileges The privileges included confidential telephone conversations with his associates. The Tribunal’s Secretariat stated that the decision had come into immediate effect. Tribunal Secretary Hans Holthuis said that he had grounds to believe that Seselj and his legal advisers had not been using the communication system provided by the Tribunal to prepare his defense, but that they had used it “for other business.” The Secretariat also alleged that privileged communication was also used by people who were not members of the defendant’s legal team. The Secretariat stated that “the possibility cannot be ruled out” that open communication between Seselj and his associates served “for attempts to make contact with, or intimidate, witnesses.” Seselj will not be denied the right to receive visits, mail or phone calls from his legal advisors, but, at least for the next thirty days, his communication will be supervised. The Serb Radical Party leader can appeal against this decision to Tribunal President Fausto Pocar.
