Get ready, a geomagnetic storm will hit us, it will be very strong; This hasn't been seen for almost 20 years
Today and in the coming days, the Earth will be hit by a strong geomagnetic storm caused by the eruptions on the surface of the Sun that occurred in the previous days.
According to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the strength of this storm will be G4, stronger than only G5, and it is expected to cause problems with power systems, spacecraft, satellites and radio frequencies.
This is the first G4 geomagnetic storm since 2005, and is expected to begin tonight and last until May 13.
It occurs due to the cumulative effect of five eruptions on the surface of the Sun that occurred in the previous days. It is also expected that this storm could cause the Aurora Borealis phenomenon further south than usual, in the U.S. states of Virginia and Alabama.
An extreme G5 geomagnetic storm was last recorded in October 2003 and caused blackouts in Sweden and damage to power transformers in South Africa.
