Belgrade, Priština have “opposing views of Serbs' position“

The dialogue has stalled because of opposing interpretations of the position of Serbs in Kosovo, Faculty of Political Sciences professor Predrag Simić has said.

BELGRADE The dialogue has stalled because of opposing interpretations of the position of Serbs in Kosovo, Faculty of Political Sciences professor Predrag Simic has said. He told Belgrade-based Pink TV that Belgrade believed that Serbs in Kosovo should have their own entity but that the word reminded Albanians of the Republic of Srpska (RS). He believes that a dilemma if those will be Serbia’s institutions or institutions of Serbs in Kosovo has been resolved and that they will be institutions of Serbs in Kosovo, i.e. autonomy within Kosovo’s Constitution. The Faculty of Political Sciences professor assessed that the talks in Brussels, led by Serbian and Kosovo prime ministers Ivica Dacic and Hashim Thaci and meetings Berlin between the delegation led by First Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic and German officials were too complicated to be finished over night. According to him, the problem is the fact that Serbia “is in a hurry” because the European Council should in April decide on Serbia’s date for the start of the EU accession talks. Analyst Dragomir Andjelkovic said that the break in the talks on Kosovo was aimed at making the Albanian side realize that they needed to make some concessions as well. According to him, a sustainable solution would be some sort of Serb entity with veto so the Serb community could block any decision and it would not be under Pristina’s patronage. “If we accept autonomy of the Serb community inside Kosovo under Pristina’s jurisdiction, then it is a big problem because Pristina is not ready for any kind of tolerance,” Andjelkovic said and reiterated that Serb cemeteries were targeted in Kosovo while the negotiations were underway.
