Majority of northern Kosovo Serb representatives have welcomed the EU’s decision to grant Serbia the candidate status. While some believe that only a strong, pro-European state can help the Kosovo Serbs, others doubt that the EU candidate status could bring any benefit to them. EU will demand Kosovo recognition, mayor says Serbia’s Ministry for Kosovo State Secretary Oliver Ivanovic says that the EU candidate status is good for all Serbian citizens, including those living in Kosovo. “Our candidacy is undoubtedly the first step toward a full-fledged membership, which means that our country will be organized in accordance with criteria that the entire Europe and the entire Western world have. It will eventually mean that Serbia will have new investments, new jobs and that it will as such be economically strong and only an economically strong state can have a great political power. And politically and economically strong Serbia can properly take care of the Serbs living in Kosovo and Metohija,” he explained. European Movement of Serbs in Kosovo NGO President and United Serb List (JSL) MP in the Kosovo assembly Rada Trajkovic believes that citizens “should primarily work on strengthening the Serbian community in the province”. “No matter how many times someone says that it will be easier for Serbs now, that Serbia will deal with us more now, I think that the Belgrade government’s main job will be further EU accession and I am therefore once again saying that it is very important to inform the population on time and tell them that all of us together have to sit down and talk and agree on a way to strengthen our position,” she pointed out. Kosovska Mitrovica Mayor Krstimir Pantic that Serbia will face new challenges on its EU integration path. “I am glad that Serbia got the EU candidate status, however the candidacy does not mean anything. A road to a full-fledged EU membership is a long process and there are conditions. I am sure that Serbia will after this be requested to give up on its remaining interests in the province, meaning to hand over the energy sector, telecommunications and a formal recognition of Kosovo will then be a condition,” he pointed out. Opposition representatives from northern Kosovo have expressed a negative stand on Serbia’s newly obtained EU candidate status. B92
