The European Parliament's rapporteur for Serbia says that the green light for ratifying the SAA "would be given within 24 hours of the arrest of Ratko Mladic". Jelko Kacin said that statements by German Chancellor Angela Merkel that EU enlargement should be put on hold once Croatia joins the Union, would not derail Serbia’s plans. EP in message of encouragement “Her statement was given for German election campaign purposes and was designed for internal political needs, but is also a statement of solidarity ahead of the Croatian elections to be held in mid-May. No one can tell a country that is qualified and whose progress is proving that it is ready for the next phase of integration, that that is not going to happen,” he underlined. He added that the statement could not be an excuse for Serbian politicians to say that there was “no use and no point in doing something for Serbia in Serbia.” Kacin explained that the best thing for Serbia would be to arrest Hague fugitives Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic, and extradite them to the Hague Tribunal. The EP rapporteur added that ratification of the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) between Serbia and EU would soon follow in that scenario.
