The decision was made as a preventive measure to facilitate and speed up the activities of all national bodies, in their effort to save lives, ensure the security of citizens and their property and repair the flood damage, the government said.

The Serbian government will hold daily meetings of the national emergency situations headquarters, closely watch the situation on the ground and inform citizens about the latest developments, the government's press office said in a release.

The Serbian government urges all citizens to comply with its decisions and do everything in their power to prevent major damage during the critical period of torrential rains expected to last until Tuesday.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic announced this measure while visiting the village of Dljin, in the Lucani municipality, that was earlier this week hit by the floods.

Assistance worth EUR 1.2 million was agreed with EU officials Thursday morning for flood victims, Vucic told the locals.

Floodwaters are receding in most flood-hit regions across Serbia, but all relevant authorities remain on alert on Thursday as more rainfall is expected, it was announced on Thursday morning.

The levels of the Sava and the Drina rivers remain steady, and there is no danger of floods for the time being, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

The situation is unchanged from Wednesday due to mostly weak rainfall overnight, the head of the MUP Emergency Situations Sector Predrag Maric said Thursday morning.

"More substantial rainfall will begin today, and intensify by 21:00. A state of full alert has been in place for 48 hours. All our teams and army and police teams are on heightened alert and the situation is being monitored hour by hour," Maric told Tanjug.

Moderate rainfall is forecast for most of Serbia Thursday, but a fresh wave of precipitation is expected to hit the country during the weekend.
