"Russia supports Nikolic; pro-Russia Dacic could become PM"

The decision of the ruling SNS to support its leader Vucic for president was "expected - because he is the most influential politician in Serbia," the article continued.

Vucic's decision to trade the position of prime minister for that of president - the latter having fewer powers, "except perhaps in foreign policy" - could mean that Vucic intends to make precisely that sphere his priority, said Kommersant, and added:

"Vucic can keep the sphere of foreign policy under his control, avoiding the current collisions inside the top state leadership."

According to the paper, "this is important for Vucic also because Nikolic is considered to be the main pro-Russia politician, who did not hide that he wanted to receive a second term."

In case Vucic becomes Serbia's president, "it will be very important who will become the next prime minister, because the new president will try to maintain his control over the government."

The daily then quotes Belgrade-based media who said Ivica Dacic could return to the helm of the Serbian government. According to Kommersant, "that would represent a compensation to Moscow of its own kind for the departure of Nikolic - since Dacic is considered to be no less pro-Russian than Nikolic."
