BELGRADE Democratic Party (DS) Political Council President Dragoljub Micunovic has stated that there are no divisions among the Democrats. He told Tanjug that he did not expect early parliamentary elections this year because the current government needed to solve the Kosovo issue first. No rifts in DS, party official says He added that the Democrats needed to consolidate their party. “The international community believes that the team that started the negotiations cannot end them because of new elections. If we have time to lose, our partners don’t. That is why it is important to complete the talks as soon as possible, to start the EU accession negotiations because only then we can expect to attract investors without whom it will be hard to make progress,” Micunovic said. He added that the DS needed to speed up consolidation, organization, mobility and to function much better than until now. The DS officials pointed to numerous problems in the country, such as poor economic situation and high unemployment rate, degradation of institutions, violation of laws, poor situation in the health and education systems. Micunovic said that the government spent a lot of energy on the Kosovo issue and the “spectacular” combat against corruption, adding that it had been reduced to arrests. “There are serious problems but I do not know if this government has a capacity and if it is ready to try to mobilize all capacities in the society to solve these problems,” he stressed. Commenting on Kosovo, Micunovic said that the Brussels agreement would be implemented thanks to the international community’s pressure and that Serbia would get a date for the beginning of the EU accession negotiations.
