Police Chief Milorad Veljovic says that the Interior Ministry is short of 14,000 personnel. Veljovic said that the increased salaries could not compensate for the lack of staff. “MUP 14,000 police officers short” He told Belgrade weekly Vreme that Belgrade was 1,823 policemen short, because of 6,427 vacancies for uniformed police, only 4,604 had been filled. Veljovic said that the Belgrade Police Brigade numbered only 864 policemen of the 1,348 needed for the department to work at full capacity. "The brigade has slightly higher salaries (app. 10 percent) and overtime pay for those who work more than 174 hours a month. A man can endure what is humanly possible, but beyond a certain point, money can’t help—what’s more there isn’t any,” said the police chief.
