Romanian Premier Calin Popescu Tariceanu was in Belgrade on Friday for meetings with Serbia's top officials. After talks with President Boris Tadic, Tariceanu said that Romania is supporting Serbia's aspirations to join the EU, adding that his country's decision not to recognize the Kosovo Albanians' unilaterally declared independence remains unchanged. Romania backs Serbia's Euro ambition "Romania is interested that stability and security reign in the region. Romania's position, with regards the independence of Kosovo, remains the same. This was also demonstrated during the vote on Serbia's resolution in the United Nations. Our arguments are based on the arguments of international law which should prevail throughout the world," he told reporters in the Serbian capital. According to him, official Bucharest also believes that the deployment of the EULEX mission in Kosovo is very important. Tariceanu said that Romanian troops would take part in this mission, despite the fact that Bucharest does not recognize the independence proclamation. Tadic thanked Tariceanu for his personal support and that of his country in the process of Serbia's European integrations and efforts to preserve her integrity in Kosovo, Tanjug reported. "Serbia wants to join the EU, but it is not giving up the defense of its integrity in Kosovo and Metohija. Romania is a country that understands Serbia's strategic interests and backs its interests and Premier Tariceanu is a sincere friend of Serbia," Tadic said after the talks. He welcomed the initiative for the organization of a trilateral meeting between top government representatives of Serbia, Romania and Italy to express support to Serbia's European path. "Only by realizing the integration strategic goals can we build a peaceful and developed region which is also in the interest of our countries and of our citizens," Tadic underscored. Speaking about EULEX, Tadic reiterated that Serbia is not opposed to its deployment if it receives a mandate for this from the UN, is status neutral and does not implement Martti Ahtisaari's plan which calls for the independence of Kosovo.
