EULEX mission chief Yves de Kermabon says that the deployment of the EU mission in Kosovo is not linked to Serbia’s EU accession. De Kermabon said that he would not rest until EULEX was able to deploy throughout the entire territory of Kosovo. “EULEX, EU accession not linked” “I think that it is only a matter of time before our mission gains understanding. A large section of people on the Albanian and Serbian side accept the EULEX mission, and I think it is more of a political, as opposed to technical, issue,” de Kermabon said. He said that negotiations with Serbia were being pursued to find the best way of deploying the mission throughout the province, stating that he would be visiting Belgrade soon for official negotiations. De Kermabon reiterated that the mission was there on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution 1244, which Belgrade recognizes, and on the basis of a decision by all 27 EU states, and that this was “a technical mission with the main goal of implementing the rule of law in Kosovo.” “We will not use force to deploy the mission, because our mission is in the best interests of all Kosovo’s citizens,” he said. So far, 500 international and 200 local mission personnel have been deployed. The mission is due to be deployed in its full capacity by early December. Asked whether the deployment of EULEX would be a condition for Serbia’s further EU integration, he said that it would not. “These two processes are parallel. I am in charge of deploying the mission in Kosovo, and on my side, no such conditions will be set,” de Kermabon pledged. Yves de Kermabon
