BELGRADE Aleksandar Vucic says he expects that Serbia will get a date for the beginning of its EU accession talks "in the spring, that is, by June of next year". The first deputy PM and defense minister spoke to reporters on Tuesday at Belgrade's Military Technical Institute, to say that the current government was due to implement the agreements reached by representatives of the previous government in the dialogue with Pristina - "as long as these solutions are in line with the Serbian Constitution". "Referendum possible as last resort" "The previous government signed something and did nothing, and now it's we are to foot the bill. I think people understand that. Somebody was acting so irresponsibly that all they wished was to win in the election, and therefore went about signing everything and anything, to then say that they were washing their hands off it so that somebody else would do their dirty work." Asked whether a referendum was being considered, that would ask the citizens to "choose between Kosovo and the EU", Vucic said that he has not heard about such a scenario, but that "a referendum is always possible as the last means through which citizens can voice their democratic will". The Belgrade-based Danas newspaper on Tuesday reported that the European Commission (EC) qualified Serbia's EU integration progress as limited and would not "explicitly recommend to the European Council to grant Serbia a date for EU accession talks".
