Presidential candidate Boris Tadic has said that today's elections were "very important as they are to confirm the country's democratic capacities". The Democratic Party leader was seeking his third term in office as Serbia's president in the runoff on Sunday against SNS leader Tomislav Nikolic. Tadic: Elections to confirm democratic capacity "Today is a very important day for Serbia and its fate in the next five years and even the next decade, as it will determine Serbia's future pathway and its character in the time ahead of us," Tadic told journalists after he cast ballot in Belgrade. "We want these elections to be conducted properly, and that no shadow is thrown on the election procedure and results. All these years after October 5, 2000, we have been promoting the democratic character of this society. This is an important day as it is yet another opportunity to reaffirm these values and the country's orientation towards the common European civilization and values," said Tadic, leader of the Democratic Party (DS). Tadic underlined that he is very optimistic and full of energy ahead of the elections, adding that he gave his best to ensure that the runoff is conducted in the best possible manner. Tadic said that it is important for the citizens to go to polls so as to reaffirm the society's democratic character and capacity. "I would like the entire world to know that people in Serbia voted today and said what their future should be like," he said. When it comes to the post-election moves, they should wait for the election results, Tadic added. As for the criticism and threats that his opponent Tomislav Nikolic voiced in the election campaign, Tadic said that they are part of political process and pressure. "Everyone in Serbia knows that there were no frauds in the first round of the presidential, parliamentary and local elections. Nothing similar happened as such political culture no longer exists in Serbia, and minor omissions occur in all European countries and they are corrected on the spot," he underlined. Tadic added that the goal of the pressure and statements in the previous few days was to create conditions for a possible review of the election results. "The best proof (of the regularity of May 6 vote) comes from the international observers who said that they cannot understand why anyone would try to bring to question the democratic character and the rule of law in Serbia after fair elections," Tadic said.
