As many as 650 residents in Croatia's coastal Adriatic town of Split have received medical treatment for injuries sustained from falling in ice-covered streets. And while the doctors blame the local authorities, the authorities blame - the injured citizens. Hundreds report weather-related injuries in Croat town KBC Split clinic Director Dujomir Marasovic says the mayor and the city should be held responsible for poor maintenance of roads under the extreme weather conditions. But the the authorities believe local services "did a stellar job", while City Council President Nevenka Becic put the blame for their injuries on the citizens. "Elder people who left their homes when they should not have bear a part of the responsibility. They should have asked their children to help them, and if they have no children, they should have asked their nephews. And, they should have long since established better relations with all of them, and if that is not the case, they should have gone to their neighbors - with whom they should also nurture good neighborly relations," Becic elaborated in a statement for Croatia's state broadcaster HTV. This town official further noted that "Split residents have no business being on the frozen city beach", and advised them to "watch their step better, and choose streets without ice".
