If Serbia retreated in front of ethnic Albanian separatists, the unilaterally proclaimed independence of Kosovo would not be the last the country would face. This was heard from Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic in Belgrade on Monday, after his meeting with Spanish counterpart Trinidad Jimenez. Jeremic: Serbia won't give in to separatists Jeremic repeated once again that Serbia would not agree to, or accept the declaration - made by ethnic Albanians over three years ago. The minister also thanked Spain for not recognizing Kosovo as independent. The two officials agreed that Spain and Serbia enjoyed excellent relations and shared the same view regarding Serbia's EU integration, and the issue of Kosovo. "The question of Kosovo has enormous significance for us, first of all in the context of creating a dangerous precedent. And for that reason we cannot accept in any way unilateral declarations of independence of parts of our territory," Jeremic told a joint news conference. The Spanish foreign minister, who also met with President Boris Tadic, stressed that her country would not recognize Kosovo and that Spain was one of five EU states that have not done so. "In that sense we wish to cooperate with the authorities of your country and to spur them to find a constructive solution to this question. And, also, we support the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina in search of a compromise," said Jimenez. She also noted that Serbia can count on Spanish support "in every sense, as was the case before", when it comes to the country's ambition to join the EU.
