Political parties on EULEX deployment

While Serbian opposition parties oppose the deployment of EULEX, the ruling coalition says that EULEX will work in the best interests of the Kosovo Serbs. The opposition Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS), Serb Radical Party (SRS) and New Serbia (NS) protested in parliament today regarding the deployment of EULEX in northern Kosovo, where Kosovo Serbs live. Political parties on EULEX deployment Democratic Party official Jelena Trivan said that everything has been done to make sure that EULEX would not endanger Serbia’s sovereignty and would be in the best interests of the Kosovo Serbs. Opposition parties claim that EULEX plans on implementing the Ahtisaari independence plan in Kosovo. United Serbia President Dragan Markovic said that EULEX’s deployment is “a great success for Serbian diplomacy,” adding that the he believes that the mission will remain neutral. He told reporters that the policies that President Boris Tadic was pursuing had led to the acceptance of the UN six-point plan for Kosovo, which ensured that EULEX would remain neutral. He added that many Kosovo Serbs accepted the mission. Markovic criticized the opposition, adding that they were sending militant messages from the parliament to Serbs that live in Kosovo. Serbian Progressive Party official Tomislav Nikolic said that there was a danger that EULEX would separate Kosovo from Serbia, adding that he did not expect the mission to remain neutral in status. Nikolic said that Kosovo could be completely cut off from Serbia in six months to a year, with the EULEX mission claiming the entire time that its status was neutral. Nikolic said that he was worried because “he has the feeling that it is one big game made to lull Serbia to sleep and to have Kosovo slowly become recognized as independent more and more, even in the UN.” He added that the government should submit a report to parliament regarding the matter, adding that EULEX was a very sensitive point in the debate on the no-confidence motion against the government.
