Kosovo police, KPS, opened an investigation of northern Kosovska Mitrovica station commander Milija Milosevic, reports said. "The General Directorate of the KPS has started an evaluation of work of our members in the police station in the north of [Kosovska] Mitrovica, in relation to the actions in Brdjani in the past several days," said spokesman Arber Beka, quoted by Pristina's Albanian language daily Koha Ditore. Serb KPS commander "under investigation" According to this, Milosevic is suspected because he "failed to respect the chain of command", as he "did not carry out the orders of the KPS General Directorate". Should he be found guilty of the violations, the commander could be "replaced, suspended, demoted or dismissed from service," said the newspaper. The settlement of Brdjani in the northern part of the ethnically divided Kosovska Mitrovica has seen months of disturbances as Serbs objected to ethnic Albanians' attempts to rebuild their houses there, in what Serbs said was contrary to a previous agreement. Today, Koha Ditore writes that UN mission in Kosovo, UNMIK, and Kosovo institutions' representatives are due to meet next week and talk about Brdjani. According to this, UNMIK chief Lamberto Zannier will in the next couple of days consult with "representatives of Kosovo's central institutions and local authorities in [Kosovska] Mitrovica". Mayor of the southern, ethnic Albanian part of the town, Bajram Redzepi, confirmed for the daily he would meet Zannier to tell him that "everyone has the right of return", and that "no one can prevent the process of return". "The UNMIK administration is obsolete, but it remains in the northern part of [Kosovska] Mitrovica due to specific circumstances," he was quoted as saying. "They don't have particular political strength, but they can cause problems sometimes." This newspaper also claims that "for several days in the past week the UN mission in Kosovo prevented continued work on rebuilding and building of Albanian homes" in Brdjani, and adds that UNMIK officials said the "Kosovo institutions never contested the mission's authority in that part of Kosovo". "The UNMIK administration in the northern part of [Kosovska] Mitrovica has been established with an executive decision. While debate was ongoing to find ways for return and building of houses, no side contested the authority of the UNMIK administration," spokesman Russell Geekie told the newspaper. Koha Ditore also reminds that, during the March UN Security Council session, Kosovo Albanian leaders asked for the UN mission to end its mandate, and that they have stopped regularly meeting with Zannier.
