A reception, attended by a large number of officials, has been held at the U.S. ambassador’s residence to mark the 233rd anniversary of American independence. In a welcome speech following renditions of both the U.S. and Serbian national anthems, the U.S. embassy’s charge d’affaires, Jennifer Brash, said that July 4 was a day for Americans to remember their history and express their commitment to democracy, tolerance and justice. U.S. embassy in independence day reception “As President Barack Obama said in Cairo last month, it’s not just a question of American values, but of fundamental principles that people throughout the world share with us,” said Brash. Speaking of U.S.-Serbia relations, she said she was glad that the two countries had managed to put aside their earlier difficulties, adding that she expected relations to strengthen and improve further. "The visit by U.S. Vice-President Joe Biden just over a month ago is a further boost towards strengthening common interests between our two countries,” Brash stressed. The reception at the U.S. embassy in Belgrade was attended by President Boris Tadic, Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic, Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic, Interior Ministar Ivica Dacic, Finance Minister Diana Dragutinovic, Defense Ministar Dragan Sutanovac and others. The event was also attended by numerous representatives of political parties, religious communities, NGOs, media, business and members of the diplomatic corps.
