Croatian President Stjepan Mesic says a procedure to strip generals convicted of war crimes of their medals will be launched soon. Mesic announced earlier that General Vladimir Zagorac would be stripped of his medals, after being convicted of robbery, stealing jewels worth some USD 5mn, and sentenced on March 2 to seven years in prison. War criminals to be stripped of medals Two other generals convicted of war crimes, Mirko Norac and Tihomir Blaskic, would be stripped of their medals as well, Mesic stated. Norac is serving a sentence for war crimes committed in Gospic in 1991, and is waiting for a ruling on war crimes committed in the Medak Pocket in 1993. Blaskic has already served his war crimes sentence. Mesic has already stripped General Ivan Korade, who murdered several people in a shoot out with police in 2008, of his medals. Mesic’s cabinet confirmed that steps would be taken against Zagorac, adding that he would be stripped of eight of the 13 medals that make him the country’s most decorated general, despite never having served a single day on the front. The procedure against Norac will begin soon as well, who will be left only with his courage medal once the procedure is finished. Similar steps are being planned for Blaskic too. Mesic has been criticized by the Croatian media for not taking such action earlier.
