European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso says that Kosovo cannot be a precedent for the secession of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. “From the start, we’ve said that Kosovo cannot create a precedent. We don’t believe that any parallels should be drawn between the situation in Kosovo and the Georgian regions,“ Barroso told a joint conference with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili yesterday. Barroso: Kosovo no precedent “Developments have confirmed this. Kosovo has been recognized by a large number of countries in the world, the overwhelming majority of EU member-states, many outside Europe... while no-one important in the world has recognized the Georgian regions,“ said the EC president. Saakashvili said that the difference between the two cases was that “NATO came to Kosovo to prevent ethnic cleansing, while Russia came to Georgia to commit ethnic cleansing.“ Barroso said that the EU would not allow the “red line“ to be crossed, which was full respect for Georgia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.
