The government has reached a decision not to recognize UNMIK-sealed diplomas of the University of Pristina. This has been confirmed Monday by Education Minister Zarko Obradovic, who was on a visit to Vranje. Belgrade won't recognize Pristina diplomas “This is a decision of the Serbian government and there are many reasons for it,” Obradovic told journalists in the southern Serbian town, but did not elaborate. The minister's comments came a day after one of the ethnic Albanian leaders from the Presevo area, Riza Halimi, expressed his dissatisfaction with the government's move. "If Halimi doesn't like the decision," Obradovic said today, "that's his problem.” Halimi told the media on Sunday that the rejection of the diplomas "came out of the blue, since the issue had been resolved in 2001". He added that this was one of the most important results that had given way to the possibility of the ethnic Albanians' integration into the bodies of local self-government. Pointing out that he had already contacted Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic, the OSCE and the ambassadors who, as he put, had been engaged in the political process in southern Serbia, Halimi said that "in case things did not change, there would be great problems, even a destabilization of the situation". Today, another ethnic Albanian leader from the region, Bujanovac municipal president Seip Kamberi, said that the decision is "unacceptable for Albanians", and that they "will be forced to react fiercely" unless agreement is reached with the ministry of education.
