Workers who were in Sochi illegally flown back

A group of 105 construction workers from Serbia, and 18 from Bosnia-Herzegovina, arrived in Belgrade late on Tuesday after being detained in Sochi, Russia.

BELGRADE A group of 105 construction workers from Serbia, and 18 from Bosnia-Herzegovina, arrived in Belgrade late on Tuesday after being detained in Sochi, Russia. They were there without necessary documents and work permits, after traveling to Russia with tourist visas. Workers who were in Sochi illegally flown back The Federal Migration Service discovered this as they checked a construction site in the town that will host the Winter Olympics, and detained the group. On Tuesday, the Serbian government decided to send an Air Serbia charter plane to Sochi to fly them back. "We have not been paid, I won't even speak about the authorities of Russia.. .inhuman conditions, we have not eaten for three days, we were in the rain, nobody spoke to us," one of the workers, Goran Nikolic, told B92. Another, Slobodan Babic, said: "What happened - we worked and everyone shouted, money at the end… we finished work, the end came, but there was no money." Miomir Stolica, a Bosnian citizen, thanked Serbia: "I wish to thank the state of Serbia, the government, the Serbian ambassador, because the government of Bosnia-Herzegovina did not want to support us at all, they did not visit us there at all." Meanwhile, the Serbian Ministry of Labor has promised that "those guilty of what happened to the workers who left only with tourist visas" would be punished. "If there have been agencies that sent people to work abroad without having an adequate license, their licence (to work) will be revoked, and all that is in line with the law undertaken - all the procedures will be launched, and other relevant authorities notified," ministry official Dragoljub Peruaca said. Similar problems have occurred before, and some officials believe that rights of workers could be regulated with an intergovernmental agreement on employment between Serbia and Russia.
