oh dear, trust sj to get off topic. you'd have to wonder though sj, why these Serbian construction workers decided to take the long road to Russia to work illegally. maybe because they can't earn $7.25 p.h in Serbia and the rates they could get in their homeland, (if they are lucky enough to find a job) aren't enough.

Pardon, me, I don't usually drop to your level but you are so full of crap your eyes can only be the color of brown.
For anyone who wants the truth on minimum wage you can look here.
http://www.dol.gov/whd/minimumwage.htm
The minimum wage is set by congress when they decide to change it, it is usually done in stages over a couple of years. The last change was in July 2009, it was not some automatic inflation adjustment as that does not happen. There is a lot of support for raising the minimum wage but there are arguments against it as if you raise the wages across the board it just causes the prices to raise in relation so are you really any better down the road.
Wasn't alive in 1949-1950 was only born in 1955 but things were not easy then either. This was a time of big union booms and wages were raised by union effort. Post ww2 was a huge time in America. My father worked, my mother never did. We were not rich but had what we needed.
Things are down now but in reality most people in the US who can't find jobs are those who have found the social gravy train is an easy ride, and do not want to work.
But again I do not know of many that work for minimum wage other than parttime, students, or unskilled workers, usually considered temp workers and in most places if they start at minimum they are raised up if they stay at the job.

Whoever told you that the minimum wage was last raised in 2009 is so full of crap you need an outhouse the size of twin towers to take it all. The $7.25 “raise” was an adjustment for “inflation” not a review of the minimum hourly rate.
As I have said before I have relatives in the US as well as Canada and by God there is a huge difference between them despite an imaginary line separating as my Canadian relatives openly say that Americans are brainwashed into believing anything.
My father lived and worked in the US from the mid 1949 to end of 1950 and he was able to work, earn money to pay his rent, medical insurance and even have savings. He worked as a cleaner for Abbots Laboratory in Chicago – meaning that they had a decent wage then, but in 2014 you have “people that work but need help from fellow employees…”. Try working the same job today and tell me you can survive. Dad did in 1950. He said that it was unheard of to help out other employees during his time.
Yes it all propaganda and I’m making it up.

However, if you want to see modern day slavery go to any one of your local Wal-Mart stores and look at the people there and they are slaves working for a pittance of $7.25 per hour. These are rates were last increased 15 years ago.

I see the master of misinformation is alive and well.
While I will not defend Walmart as I find that the Walton family has amassed billions, some of that should have been passed onto the workers who made it possible.
The Federal minimum wage is indeed 7.25 but was last raised in 2009 not 15 years ago. Many states have a higher minimum wage as a state may have a higher minimum than federal but not lower. Most minimum wage jobs are those who are part time, students and the very basic of unskilled labor. Walmart employees many of these people but they have several a large work force that is fulltime, higher wages and with benefits such as health insurance.
A lot of people who have a fulltime job either have both parents working or one will stay home and one will have an extra parttime job. We have become a 2 income society mainly because most believe they must have a large house, at least 2 cars, etc.
Slavery? please, don't even go there.
The people I work with often take up collections to help out fellow employees with lower salaries or with unexpected emergencies all year round not just at Christmas. Most companies and corporations have employee groups that do that. This is an admirable quality in the Walmart stores that did this.

About Mother Russia

1. No matter what I or anybody else say coz everyone on this forum will keep on sticking their own interests or viewing.
2. Mother Russia is correct only when we speak about where Serbs (Poles , Croats, Bosniaks , Czech , Slovenians ect.) came to the Balkans from ,when we talk about mental , moral , blood , religion and historical unity of the two people.
3. When it comes to the Olympic Games , visa regime and few other things Russian rules become severe with no exclusions for anyone.
4. For the time being Russia’s biggest projects are the Ukraine and the Olympics. So the riot in Kiev and the US fleet in the near about and many other things are connected. Before the games are over we can do nothing in the Ukraine and the rivals know it. They exploit it when they pay money and encourage the Nazi.
5. Serbs have nothing to worry about as 105 is nothing compared to 500 000 other foreigners already deported from Russia. Thus the Albanian dream to split us remains dead born. The dogs always bark as the caravan is passing by.
6. Another thing is that the construction is over and in Sochi we need no workers any longer. Yugoslavians always had reputation of good construction workers, so Serbs are welcome to try themselves in other regions but not Sochi.
7. For the time being Sochi is a closed city with severe restrictions for everybody including the Russians. Our Wakhabbi-American “friends” never let us to relax.

Serbs are often taken advantage of like this. Once a country is broken its citizens tend to get shafted because they are desperate and will go for things like this.
But doesn't Serbia have any construction companies currently working legally in Sochi? I thought there were a lot of agreements, made years ago with Russia, for the upcoming work.

Serbia should try to recoup some payment for the work they did do there and distribute it to them. They should talk to Russian diplomats about it.

Peggy

Just look at how many Albanians are positively giddy with excitement about this situation. Rejoicing in the mistreatment of these workers. Rejoicing in the hope that Serbs will hate Russians for this.
We don't know the whole story here. Did the workers know they were going to work illegally there? If they dind't then the company who sold them this pipe dream should be punished.
Was it the Russian government who mistreated these workers or was it a greedy construction company owner who would mistreat his own mother for profit? I am certain that an average Russian would be appauled by this so before you Albanians get too happy in the misguided belief that Serbs are going to turn on Russians or that Russians don't care about Serbs get more facts.

Someone here is clearly breaking the law and charges should be laid. A throrough investigation is needed. Someone has to pay.

Typical Albanian comments here. Their countrymen and women are sent back daily by the bus load from Europe because they are illegally living and working in EU countries and they think that 150 Serbs are a big deal. no point in trying to score petty points here. i have sympathy for the Serbian workers, who were simply trying to earn a living any way they could. at the risk of sounding naive, they are not guilty of an unforgivable crime. of course in a perfect world, no one would have to resort to working illegally, but a perfect world doesn't exist. it doesn't say much for Russia though that it essentially used their labour for nothing only to send them back so as to avoid having to remunerate them

However, if you want to see modern day slavery go to any one of your local Wal-Mart stores and look at the people there and they are slaves working for a pittance of $7.25 per hour. These are rates were last increased 15 years ago.

I for one wouldn't because I live in a country where I wouldn't be able to survive on that much.
Now if these people who would love to work for that money lived in Philippines or India and the like then I would agree with you but if they have to live in America and live on that then you are very wrong.
Would you want to be a slave like that? Maybe you live in "Kosova" and that would be excellent wages.

You were duped by someone writing a story wanting to advance an agenda. And you call Albanians naïve(actually I think your terminology is much worse)

Don't you think that 95% of the Serbian workers (with the average Salary in Serbia being some 300€/month) would be happy to work for that 'pittance'?

Nikolle

oh dear, trust sj to get off topic. you'd have to wonder though sj, why these Serbian construction workers decided to take the long road to Russia to work illegally. maybe because they can't earn $7.25 p.h in Serbia and the rates they could get in their homeland, (if they are lucky enough to find a job) aren't enough.

That's why we have a lot of convincing to do, dear, about what you said, otherwise there will be a stampede of billions of people begging for the $ 7.25/hr that you mentioned.

Modern day slavery! It seems these are not the only cases either and there are tens of thousands of workers in the same situation, according to Human Rights Watch:
