The UN secretary general has said that the Srebrenica massacre will haunt the international community for a long time due to its inability to prevent the crime.

NEW YORK The UN secretary general has said that the Srebrenica massacre will haunt the international community for a long time due to its inability to prevent the crime. "To be honest, the UN especially have not been capable of helping people there at a time when that help was needed. That will remain engraved in the consciousness of the world and the UN," the Sarajevo-based Dnevni Avaz newspaper quoted Ban Ki-moon as saying. UN chief: Srebrenica is engraved in UN consciousness Ban also noted that the 1995 tragedy was the reason he would visit Srebrenica during his upcoming tour of the region: "We must never allow for such things, such tragic events to happen again. The United Nations are dedicated to work ever more diligently in order not to allow for such tragic events to occur again." Ban added that it was for that reason that in 2005 the international community decided to establish "principled responsibility for protection of civilians". Commenting once again on the election of Serbian FM Vuk Jeremic as president of the UN General Assembly, Ban stated that "the people of Serbia ought to be proud to have such a special person as Jeremic": "He is one of those chiefs of diplomacy that I met with perhaps most often here. Our encounters were very cordial and based on mutual respect. I look forward to working with him starting this September in his new role as General Assembly president." Ban also pointed out that Jeremic was not elected nor given this role in order to "acting only on behalf of his country". "Therefore, Jeremic will be General Assembly president who will care about and improve all the issues related to all (UN member states) on that agenda. That is something that ought to be put ahead of the interests of Serbia". Ban will start his regional tour on July 18, when he will visit Slovenia, followed by Croatia, Montenegro, and then Belgrade and Pristina.
