UNHCR: Serbia now at center of crisis

Guterres said that "now that Hungary has closed its border, Serbia will inevitably become the center of the refugee crisis," and suggested that the EU should immediately redirect programs for providing care and enabling displacement for refugees who intended to enter Hungary through Serbia.

An immediate response is necessary in order to provide assistance to Serbia, the UNHCR head said addressing the members of the European Parliament Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Subcommittee on Human Rights in Brussels.

Guterres "does not believe that Serbia will forcefully reject refugees whom the Hungarian authorities are trying to deport to Serbia," as previously announced by Serbian Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Aleksandar Vulin.

"The Serbian government has so far maintained a highly responsible attitude," Guterres told members of the European Parliament.

He also "expressed his disbelieve and disappointment" that EU's interior minister last night failed to adopt European Commission's comprehensive plan to solve the crisis, instead postponing their decision for October.

In order to solve the crisis you must start solving it, the UN official told EU countries.

High EU Representatives for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini also took part in the Tuesday session and she warned the EP that it must not be allowed for transit countries in EU neighborhood " to be left high and dry," according to Tanjug.

"Social, political, and even ecological problems caused by the great influx of refugees could destabilize those countries and force their citizens as well to refugees in transit," she stressed.
