New EU Foreign and Security Policies Chief Catherine Ashton will be making her first visit to Serbia on Thursday. Belgrade officials said that it is a good sign that one of her first official visits will be to the Balkans. Ashton to visit Belgrade Ashton will be meeting with Serbian senior officials, including the president, prime minister, and other cabinet officials to discuss Serbia’s EU integration process. In an interview with daily Vecernje novosti, Ashton said that the doors of the EU are open to the countries of the region, and that Serbia needs to complete its cooperation with the Hague Tribunal and continue battling corruption and organization crime while ensuring an effective implementation of the law. Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic said that he expects Ashton’s support in making Serbia a candidate for EU membership as soon as possible. “We will see in what measure her role as the EU foreign affairs minister will succeed in forming relations in such processes as obtaining candidacy. She will be presiding over the EU Council of Ministers, which will be a decisive factor, and the person who presides over the council is the first among equals,” President of the Foreign Policy Council of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Sonja Liht, said. Ashton to visit Belgrade

Ashton will be meeting with Serbian senior officials, including the president, prime minister, and other cabinet officials to discuss Serbia’s EU integration process.

In an interview with daily Večernje novosti, Ashton said that the doors of the EU are open to the countries of the region, and that Serbia needs to complete its cooperation with the Hague Tribunal and continue battling corruption and organization crime while ensuring an effective implementation of the law.

Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Božidar Đelić said that he expects Ashton’s support in making Serbia a candidate for EU membership as soon as possible.

“We will see in what measure her role as the EU foreign affairs minister will succeed in forming relations in such processes as obtaining candidacy. She will be presiding over the EU Council of Ministers, which will be a decisive factor, and the person who presides over the council is the first among equals,” President of the Foreign Policy Council of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Sonja Liht, said.

After her stop in Belgrade, Ashton will head to Priština.
