EU, U.S. call for resolution without delay
The U.S. and EU voiced conviction that Ahtisaari’s plan submitted to the UN. Security Council on April 26 was a basis for the new resolution on Kosovo. They insisted that “in this crucial moment for the Western Balkans it was essential to settle the status issue of Kosovo as soon as possible.”
“We call on the UN Security Council to adopt the resolution in a timely manner. Kosovo status settlement will promote the development and stability of the entire region. We reiterate that the province is a unique case which will not set a precedent for crisis management strategy in other regions worldwide,” the document said.
According to the document, the European Union and the United States will remain committed to “working towards furthering NATO-EU contacts to ensure smooth planning for Kosovo s post-status security.”
They also supported the organization of donor conferences to raise funds and aide the development of Kosovo following its status settlement.
“We support European and Euro-Atlantic perspective of all Western Balkans states,” the EU and U.S. concluded in the document.
The summit was attended by highest EU and U.S. officials, including U.S. President George Bush, European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, the current holder of the rotating EU presidency.
