The Serbian Customs Administration prevented 140 to 150 attempted illegal border crossings in the past few months, Assistant Director Nenad Manic says. Manic told state broadcaster RTS that modern equipment "greatly contributed to such good results", stating that scanners have been installed at all major border crossings, including Batrovci with Croatia, Horgos with Hungary and Gradina with Bulgaria. Up to 150 illegal crossings prevented in past months Without using the scanners, it would not be possible to discover hidden immigrants concealed in trains, he said. Manic noted that the number of attempted illegal crossings has increased after the so-called Arab Spring, pointing out that immigrants come mostly from Afghanistan and Syria and that Serbia is not their final destination. According to him, examinations at border crossings are carried out on the basis of operational data and evaluation of customs officers, since checking all vehicles would require too much time and cause traffic congestion. Manic also said that there has been an increase in the smuggling of drugs and gold as well, which is connected with an increase in its price on the market, and added that the Customs Administration prevented the smuggling of 90 kg of gold in 2011, which is ten times more than in 2010.
