National Bank of Serbia (NBS) Governer Radovan Jelasic says Serbians are not too endebted to the banks. They owe much less than others in the region, the central bank chief said on Saturday. "Serbians owe less than regional average" "Our citizens do not owe very much," Jelasic stated, noting that "compared to politicians, who only a few weeks ago hiked pensions and salaries and are now wondering where to find the money, the citizens have shown much more responsibility with regards to taking out loans." "Our citizens have much less debt than in the region," Jelasic underscored, adding that with regards mortgage loans, the overall value of mortgaged real estate is about 65 percent, "compared to the 90 percent figure in the United States". Official data show a EUR 576 debt per capita in Serbia, while the region has an average EUR 1,500 figure.
