Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attack. The terrorist organization has recently carried out several attacks in this area of the city.

According to Reuters, the explosion happened near a beauty salon in Sadr City. Most of the victims of Wednesday's attack were women.

The report also quoted Amaq agency, "that supports Islamic State," as saying the intended target of a suicide bomber were "Shi'ite militia fighters."

Islamic State controls significant areas of northern and western Iraq, including the second largest city, Mosul.
