It is suspected that the attackers were timber thieves from Kosovo.
According to reports, the officer, identified as Steva Sinđelić, was shot in the head and was transported to Belgrade via helicopter. But the doctors at the military clinic VMA were unable to save his life, according to the RTS.
This incident near the village of Orlovac came less than 24 hours after the police came across a group of ethnic Albanians from Kosovo stealing wood in this region of the town of Kuršumlija. In the ensuing exchange of fire, one from the group of timber thieves was shot in the leg.
It is suspected that the group that opened fire on the Gendarmes this morning was the same that fled the scene yesterday, and that they returned on Thursday to recover the weapons and equipment they had left behind.
The police announced on Thursday that several persons of Albanian nationality opened fire on the Gendarmes securing the scene of investigation in the village of Orlovac.
Previously, Interior Minister Nebojša Stefanović condemned in the strongest terms the attack on police officers and "the destruction of the property of the Republic of Serbia," the MUP said in a statement.
Later in the day, it was announced that Stefanović ordered "strong police forces" to be sent to this part of the Ground Safety Zone in order to protect local residents and the country's "vital interests."
