A coalition between the Democratic Party (DS) and the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) is meaningless to me, said DS deputy leader Dragan Djilas. He told daily Vecernje novosti that it was impossible to form a coalition with people who had been doing everything wrong in the past 20 years, adding that they were now, under a new name, seeking power and that they were still unable to offer at least one concrete solution for the problems we were facing. DS-SNS coalition “would be meaningless” Djilas said that the SNS was wrong to count on all dissatisfied voters. “Citizens know that there are no guarantees that the radical fraction called the Progressives will not turn into something third tomorrow. Those are the same politicians who offered us changes four years ago by wearing T-shirts with (Serb Radical Party leader Vojislav) Seselj’s image,” he was quoted as saying. The DS official stressed that the SNS was pretending to be more European than the entire Serbia and President Boris Tadic. “No problem, just let them honestly tell people they were lying to them back then, or they are lying to them today,” he pointed out. The Belgrade mayor stressed that there was nothing wrong to sometimes lead a wrong policy and change, but that it was a problem if someone always made mistakes and was never ready to admit it. “They are now sitting and making agreements with (Islamic Community in Serbia Chief Mufti) Muamer Zukorlic, a man who organizes demonstrations against construction of a kindergarten in Novi Pazar, who calls for boycott of the state census, with a man who is even called a criminal who constantly ‘sets fire’ in that part of Serbia by the Belgrade mufti. As if they want to cooperate only with people who are working against the interests of the state. There is no talking with such people, just like with (Bogoljub) Karic who is a fugitive from justice,” Djilas explained. When asked about the meeting of his deputy Milan Krkobabic and SNS deputy leader Aleksandar Vucic, he said that everybody had the right to choose their own path but added that it was odd for the deputy mayor to have tea with someone who had been accusing the mayor of being a thief. Commenting on speculations that he will be DS’ candidate for prime minister, Djilas said that there was no better job than that of the Belgrade mayor. Dragan Djilas
