Serbia will launch a counter-suit against Croatia for crimes perpetrated during Operation Storm in 1995, says Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremic. After the International Court of Justice ruled that it was competent to hear Croatia’s legal action against Serbia for genocide perpetrated against non-Serbs from 1991-95, Serbia will retaliate with a suit of its own, said Jeremic. Jeremic: Serbia to sue over Storm “Very sadly, Croatia has not responded to the hand of friendship or our efforts to leave the past behind us that Serbia has offered on a number of occasions, so that we can turn towards a European future,“ the minister told state broadcaster RTS. He added that Croatia had refused to face up to the fact that 250,000 Serbs had been driven from their homes in Croatia, but that it would have to do so this time before the International Court of Justice (ICJ). “Croatian officials, as far as I know, are demanding that the truth be told. We agree, let’s establish the truth and let’s give this to the court of history and the court of justice, and that’s why we’ll offer them a chance to respond to Serbia’s suit for war crimes, for ethnic cleansing committed in Croatia in 1995,“ Jeremic said. The minister added that Serbia would do all it could to help strengthen good relations in the region. “Our common future is a European future. For the sake of a European future we should move towards reconciliation. I think that this is maybe the best way. Let’s finally establish the truth before the court of justice and the court of history of what really happened during Operation Storm,” he said. Jeremic added that Serbia would present the matter so that all aspects of 20th century history were reviewed, including the events of the Second World War, as it was essential to turn to history in order to ascertain the truth.
