The NATO peacekeeping force is currently 16,000 soldiers strong, organized in four zones of responsibility. Meanwhile, the chief of the civilian part of the international mission in Kosovo, UNMIK, has called for a speedy decision on Kosovo status, claiming that "other scenarios are possible as well." "We hope that the Troika will succeed in its efforts after all," Joachim Ruecker said in an interview for the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. "However, as people who look ahead, we have to prepare ourselves for other scenarios as well," he specified, but refused to speculate on the nature of these scenarios. Ruecker also refused to comment on the way he would react in case of a unilaterally proclaimed independence, but just said that in such circumstances, he would "not make decisions by himself, but would rather ask New York for instructions."
