"Serbia treats human trafficking seriously"

Interior Minister Ivica Dacic said in Geneva that the battle against human trafficking in Serbia was being treated with the utmost seriousness. All of the country's social and state institutions were involved in the effort, the Interior Ministry said in a statement released on Dec. 6. "Serbia treats human trafficking seriously" Dacic told an International Organization for Migration conference that solving the question of false asylum seekers and illegal migrants necessitated good cooperation among states, international organizations and police, the ministry said. He also said that Serbia was additionally coping with the problem of false asylum seekers who were trying to make their way into the EU from Serbia and that another issue was the appearance of illegal migrants and asylum seekers from Africa and Asia. Dacic said that there were around 5,000 illegal migrants in Serbia and around 2,700 foreigners seeking asylum. Dacic stressed that much had been done over the past several years to facilitate the battle against human trafficking and promote prevention, as well as train police, judges, and prosecutors so that they were capable of dealing with the challenges that these issues brought.
