Serbia cannot yet expect EU candidacy status, writes Ljubljana daily Delo, following yesterday's meeting of EU foreign ministers. Analyzing the EU’s acceptance of new members, the newspaper concludes that, for Serbia and other Western Balkan countries, “the sacred goal has moved into the undetermined future, since, except for Croatia, none of the former Yugoslav republics have been given the possibility of a decisive step toward Brussels.” Daily: Enlargement fatigue The cause of that is probably “enlargement fatigue”, which explains the ostensible lack of political will (among the majority) of EU members. EU member-states always find a reason to delay realizing the Salonika requirements, due, among others things, to poor experiences with new members Romania and Bulgaria. “Enlargement fatigue”, among the causes for the status quo, is joined by internal problems in the EU from the consequences of the financial crisis and strained economic opportunities. Delo writes that interest in the Western Balkans has again “awakened”, above all, high participation in European banks in crisis, “which means (EU Enlargement) Commissioner Olli Rehn’s suspicions that the region will pay the bill for financial capitalism’s error are not unfounded.”
