A former UN mission in Kosovo, UNMIK, chief says that the EU is not neutral on the issue of Kosovo's status. This, Soren Jessen-Petersen told RFE, is because 22 out of 27 member-states "have a clear stance on it". Ex-UNMIK chief: EU is not neutral "It was necessary to preserve UN Resolution 1244 as a basis for the EULEX mission, but the reality is different. Kosovo is independent and nothing can change this reality," the Danish official told this radio station's Albanian language service today. According to him, the EU mission's presence in Kosovo "should be the best guarantee that there will be no partition". "The EU was part of the Contact Group which a few years ago established the principle that there will be no partition of Kosovo. We must assume that the EU will remain true to its principles and I am completely convinced that EULEX gas the goal of integrating all citizens and all parts of Kosovo." Jessen-Petersen continued that "the north represents a problem now", but also voiced his conviction that "if EULEX works for the well-being of all citizens of Kosovo, the Serbs in the north will understand that their future is in Kosovo." "The UN secretary-general has repeated the formulation 'new reality' since he cannot use the word 'independence'. When he speaks about a 'new reality' it is about an independent Kosovo," the former UNMIK chief interpreted.
