An adviser to PM Vojislav Kostunica today responded to Washington's accusations after the riots in Belgrade. Branislav Ristivojevic of the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) reacted to U.S. claims that the Serbian government is to be held responsible for the attack on that country's embassy in Belgrade during the unrest two days ago. Kostunica party hits back at U.S. accusations Ristivojevic told Tanjug news agency that the only way to calm and stabilize the situation in the region will be for the United States, "which produced the crisis in the Balkans", to urgently go back to the UN Security Council and reaffirm the world organization's Resolution 1244, which guarantees Serbia's territorial integrity and sovereignty. The demonstrations, and later rioting in the capital came in response to the unilateral declaration of Kosovo's independence, but also because the U.S. was among the first to recognize the move Serbia has rejected as illegal. "Since it is America that is behind the most brutal violation of the UN Charter and Resolution 1244, the only right solution is, through a decision of the Security Council and annulment of illegal acts, for the U.S. to initiate the possibility that the principles of international law be reestablished in the Balkans," Ristivojevic said, in rhetoric far from reconciliatory. “In case Americans continue to insist on their current stand that the false state of Kosovo exists, and persist on its position that the UN Charter and international law does not apply in the Balkans, all further responsibility is on their heads,” Ristivojevic warned. He concluded that by insisting on its policy of force, America was "threatening the peace and stability of the region and the world order as a whole". Late last evening, his party colleague, Minister for Kosovo Slobodan Samardzic also reacted to protests coming from Washington, by saying that the government "will not cease to call on the U.S. to take responsibility for breaking international law and tearing a sovereign territory apart in a brute manner".
