LDP: Ministers supporting violence
21 February 2008 | 13:01 | Source: B92, Tanjug
BELGRADE -- The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) stated the attacks on their party headquarters can be likened to "state-led terrorism."

In an open letter to the Serbian institutions, media and embassies, LDP accused Ministers Slobodan Samardžić and Velimir Ilić of supporting the violence aimed at its headquarters recently. Velimir Ilić denied the accusations.

On Sunday night, angry protesters attacked LDP’s headquarters in several cities and the homes of its leaders.

B92 was not able to get an answer from the prosecutor’s office why there were no legal reactions by the institutions after the attack on LDP.

The party stated that this is not the first time that it has warned the state prosecutor’s of such a campaign being led against the party and its president .

LDP official Zoran Ostojić, said that Ilić said that LDP leader Čedomir Jovanović should feel “lucky if he stays alive until March, but that it will not be easy.”

“There is no reason for the people who were at this dinner with Velimir Ilić to lie that this did not happen. He said this, when he was angered by the interjection of someone at the dinner regarding the work of the government, who said that Čedomir Jovanović will win the next elections and that he will be voting for the LDP leader,” Ostojić said.

“ A that time, Velimir Ilić said that Čedomir Jovanović should be happy if he is alive in March, which is one version, or that he will go where Đinđić is by the end of the week, which is the second version. Ilić knows what dinner this is and knows who was there,” Ostojić said.

Ilić denied the claims, stating that he had not mentioned Jovanović recently.

“It makes no sense, and I call on the investigative bodies to investigate these accusations and report back publicly. I will ask the Internal Affairs Ministry to check what was said. There is evidence and witnesses that say that no one in my vicinity over these last several days mentioned Jovanović in any context,” Ilić said.

“I do not know what they are talking about, I do not know who is threatening him and what is happening with him, and believe me, these accusations are very strange as are the claims of having witnesses. I would like to see them, and I myself have witnesses who can confirm what I’ve said,” Ilić said.

The Belgrade Center for Human Rights states that in the last four days there have been constant and massive violations of the human rights of citizens by people who claim they are protection national interests by making others victims of their anger and unlawfulness.

The center called on the police, courts and executive institutions to respect the Serbian constitution and laws, and called on all citizens to secure personal freedoms and security for their properties.
