Serbian Patriarch Irinej has called on the nation to stand united and composed, and in that way contribute to the peaceful defense of Kosovo and Metohija. "Today Serbia is fighting one of the greatest battles in her history to preserve her soul and defend her holy land of Kosovo and Metohija," the patriarch said in Belgrade on Thursday. Patriarch urges nation to stand united His address came as the top UN tribunal, the International Court of Justice, prepares to give its advisory opinion on the legality under international law of the Kosovo Albanian unilateral independence declaration, which Serbia rejects as an illegal act of secession. Patriarch Irinej noted however that "as this fateful question is being solved in The Hague today, it will not be the last temptation, since more hard days are ahead of us". "Whatever the solution (given today), we must fight for negotiations to reach the most appropriate solution for Kosovo and Metohija, which will be acceptable both for Serbs and (ethnic) Albanians, so that they can live together in peace and prosperity, and have a future," said the spiritual leader of the Orthodox Serb Christians. He also stated that only such a solution would allow those driven out of their homes to return, and rebuild Serb holy places destroyed in Kosovo. "Today is an important day for the peaceful solution to a burning issue, and for our efforts to preserve what has belonged to the Serb people for centuries." The patriarch also invited citizens to join the Church in special prayers this afternoon. The Orthodox Christian moleban prayer, usually offered in a time of crisis, will today be served for peace and a favorable outcome of crisis over the status of Kosovo, the cradle of the Serb nation, said the patriarch.
