Opposition Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) MPs will ask the Constitutional Court to assess the constitutionality of the Vojvodina statute. DSS Vojvodina board chief Zoran Loncar said that the statute and the law for transferring authorities to the province are not in accordance with the Serbian Constitution, and other laws. Loncar told a news conference in Novi Sad this Monday that the court has never been faced with such a serious proposal to appraise accordance with the Constitution, and added that he expects the judges to afford the proposal the legal and political importance that it deserves. The DSS official, a former cabinet minister, also said that it is up to the court to maintain the unity of Serbia and its territorial integrity, by deeming the Vojvodina statute and accompanying laws "wholly unconstitutional". Loncar reminded of his party's stance that the statute is unconstitutional and that it is creating a state within a state out of the province, securing the elements of statehood for Vojvodina.
