The Croatian and Serbian PMs have agreed to resolve difficult bilateral issues step by step, but to focus on EU integration and cooperation for the time being. “We expect certain issues to be resolved very quickly, while others will begin to be addressed in the future, in keeping with the constant need to establish better relations between the two states,“ said Mirko Cvetkovic after a joint press conference with Ivo Sanader. Cvetkovic stressed that major differences still existed between Belgrade and Zagreb, especially when it came to Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, alluding to Croatia’s recognition of Kosovo’s unilateral independence and Croatia's genocide suit against Serbia at the International Court of Justice. Milica Delevic, the director of the Serbian Government European Integration Office, and Bjanka Matkovic, the Croatian state secretary for Political Affairs within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, signed a Protocol on Cooperation in the European Integration Process on behalf of their respective countries. Meanwhile, Serbian and Croatian Education Ministers Zarko Obradovic and Bozo Biskupic signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in the field of language and literature. Sanader is now meet ing with representatives of the Croat minority in Serbia, Speaker Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, before rounding off his trip with a meeting with President Boris Tadic. According to the Croatian HINA agency, Sanader’s third visit to Belgrade is expected to lead to an improvement in relations that took a drastic turn for the worse last year when Zagreb recognized Kosovo’s unilateral independence. The Croatian prime minister is due to meet with his Serbian counterpart, Mirko Cvetkovic, and President Boris Tadic, while the agenda will feature, among other things, the open question of the return of refugees and property, missing persons, protection of national minorities and economic cooperation in the industrial and energy sectors.
