European Union Special Envoy to Kosovo Pieter Feith says that it is possible to receive some sort of approval from the UN for the EULEX mission in Kosovo. He said that the approval could be in the form of a statement by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Feith expects UN to approve EULEX At a press conference in Caglavica, Feith said that there would be further consultations between the EU, Belgrade and UN, which could lead to some form of approval, though he said that this was not necessary for EULEX to continue its deployment in line with UN Security Council Resolution 1244. “If there is an agreement between the members of the UN Security Council regarding that statement, that would be desirable,” Feith said, adding that he was well aware of the differences in opinion within the Security Council and that an agree would be hard to come by. He said that EULEX’s main challenges would be involving all communities, especially the Serbs, and deploying the mission throughout the province. Meanwhile, EULEX will become operational in early December and will be deployed throughout the territory of Kosovo, EULEX Chief Yves de Kermabon stated in Caglavica on Wednesday. At a meeting in the Media Center, de Kermabon said that there were misunderstandings with the Serb community, but that they had to be clarified. “Our mission should be deployed but it will not be deployed forcefully,“ said de Kermabon, adding that people had to be persuaded that the process was in the interests of all the province’s citizens, and that EULEX should be there. He underlined that he was ready to travel to Belgrade and discuss with Serbia's officials technical issues regarding the Serb community. Pieter Feith (FoNet, archive)
