Tunisia's interim government spokesperson Taieb Baccouche condemned an announcement made by Italian Interior Minister Roberto Maroni. Maroni said that he would ask Italian security forces to be sent to Tunisia to stem the flow of illegal immigrants to Italian territory. Tunisia condemns Italian statement It is unacceptable. World media said that during Sunday night about 1,000 new illegal immigrants arrived from Tunisia to the Italian island of Lampedusa. Due to the increased influx of immigrants, local authorities asked for Rome’s support, since several thousand of people have landed on the island during the last week, Reuters reported. The Italian government proclaimed a humanitarian emergency and gave local authorities extraordinary powers to control migrant flows. Italian officials told Reuters that the government will discuss the issue in direct contact with the Tunisian interim government. Baccouche said that the interim government will consider the problem, and that security forces should be employed. The Cabinet has to discuss the issue when the Italian government contacts us, he told the American AP news agency. Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini on Sunday again called on the EU to help solving the problem after one boat sank off Tunisia's coast on Saturday, when at least one man died. We have to mobilize Mediterranean countries which have boats, aircraft, helicopters, Frattini told the Corriere Della Sera newspaper.
