Strengthening borders isn't enough. You have to decrease the attractiveness of Europe as a destination by making their home countries more livable. There needs to be a slowdown in the birthrate, and more jobs for current and future young adults.

The most humane way to curb the birthrate is to introduce education for women, and then jobs for them to go to once they have completed their educations. (Otherwise, why would they bother going?) It's worked like a charm in the rest of the world.

As for jobs, the governments should put their people to work building new cities - one of the demands of the Egyptian protesters was for housing. Egypt at least has plenty of space - they can collaborate with the Israelis to learn how to "make the desert bloom" with massive desalination plants and concentrated solar-energy installations to provide clean power. The protesters have done their job - now it's time for the military to make credible plans for transition to a civilian government with plans to remake the country.

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini on Sunday again called on the EU to help solving the problem .

B92

Frattini is deluding himself believing that EU will solve the problem of illegal immigration that is afflicting mainly Greece,Italy and Spain.

There is a chronically high birth rate in Tunisia and other islamic countries which is well above any potential growth
rates they could achieve. Therefore , surplus labour must be exported and since Europe is a soft-spot they all end up in there.

My advice to Mr Frattini will be Italy could save itself lots of money by buying these economic immigrants one way train ticket direct to Munich,Paris and Calais. Then Europe will understand something should be done about its borders. It's so easy to sit in a nice armchair in Brussels and talk about what happens in Greece,Italy or Spain.
