"I can tell you that I my work has been pure and responsible and that I have defended the interests of Serbia," Vucic told a press conference after his meeting in Belgrade with RS President Milorad Dodik.

He added that during the conversation with Yee, he spoke about "Serbia's independent decision-making and that citizens of Serbia are the ones that first have a say about their future."

"Hoyt Yee is a serious politician, he has conveyed messages that are difficult for us, but which I would not say are new. The tone may have been slightly higher, so I myself defended the interests of Serbia by an octave more strongly," Vucic said.

He added that his cabinet reached a consensus with the US side when it comes to the statement that was eventually issued from the meeting - that cites only the US diplomat and announces Vucic's "replies" for a later date - and that the first text offered by the Serbian side was "much more brutal and reflecting what was really happening at the meeting" - and that he was "convinced that the US side expected Serbia to sugarcoat something."

"My answers were backed by arguments, civilized," Vucic said.

He added that it would be "hard for Serbia to count on prosperity in future without good relations with the US."

"But what kind of a country would we be not to inherit our spirit of liberty. We respect the interests of the United States, Europe, Russia, but we respect the interests of Serbia," Vucic said, adding that "the media in Serbia are equally divided into one of the 'chairs (pro-Russia or pro-US)" - but that he "believes that 50 percent of citizens want an independent Serbia."
