Opposition DSS leader and former Serbian premier for two terms Vojislav Kostunica today criticized the government's EU and Kosovo policy. The European Union in blackmailing Serbia over Kosovo, he said, and predicted that the pressure would increase, with the country in a deep economic and political crisis. Former PM: EU blackmailing Serbia "Serbia will be subjected to pressure and open blackmail, with its continued EU road conditioned with establishing good neighborly relations with Kosovo," Kostunica believes. Kosovo's ethnic Albanians unilaterally declared independence in early 2008, which Belgrade rejected as an illegal attempt at secession. Kostunica said that more pressure should be expected regarding Serbia's draft UN General Assembly resolution. The DSS leader sees this pressure in new wording being added to the draft, "in agreement with the EU". The modified document would then read that "Serbia and Kosovo should engage in talks on technical issues in order to become good neighbors", according to Kostunica. He added that it was clear as early as in 2008 that the western powers, "which stand behind the unilateral independence of the fake state of Kosovo", will use the issue of EU integrations as pressure and blackmail on Serbia to establish good neighborly relations with Kosovo. "Not only is it not true that Kosovo and EU are separate subjects, but the truth is that Serbia is being conditioned in the most direct manner to pay with its territory for a continuation of the already, in many ways, uncertain EU integrations," he warned. According to him, the recent ICJ opinion in the Kosovo case was used as a cause to exert open pressure against the country. "The only answer is for Serbia to reject blackmail and pressure and say publicly that continued EU path cannot be built on giving up on Kosovo, and selling out the state territory," Kostunica was quoted as saying. The DSS leader also believes that any changes to the UN draft resolution, "which already fails to adequately protect state and national interests", would be tantamount to "throwing in the towel, and an act of surrender of Kosovo".
