Šešelj in hospital, closing statement canceled

A spokesperson for the Hague Tribunal confirmed on Friday that Vojislav Seselj had been transferred from his prison unit to a civilian hospital. As a consequence, his closing remarks in the trial, which had been scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, were canceled, the court said. The release also states that the Trial Chamber canceled Seselj's closing statement in the main trial against him on the charges of war crimes committed in the territory of Croatia, Vojvodina and Bosnia-Herzegovina in the period from 1991 to 1993, which was scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, March 12 and 13. The trial should continue on Wednesday, March 14, which will depend on the defendant's ability to appear before the court, the release states. Seselj's opposition Serb Radical Party (SRS) said earlier in the day that their leader was transferred to the hospital early on Friday because his health condition suddenly deteriorated and that he would probably undergo an operation in order to have doctors fix his defibrillator which was implanted in January. The Hague canceled the status conference in the trial against Seselj on one of the contempt of court charges which was scheduled for Friday.
