The Serbian dairy industry is expanding and import of milk is expected to stop in 2012, said Minister of Agriculture and Trade Dusan Petrovic. In an interview for Tanjug, Petrovic said Serbia currently imports between 50 and 70 tons of raw milk a day, which means not enough milk is being produced in the country and there is room to expand production. "Dairy industry to grow, imports to be halted" Petrovic pointed out dairies in Serbia purchased over 800 million liters of milk from farmers in 2011, some ten percent more than the year before. In 2010, dairies bought a total of 760 million liters, so there is a clear rising trend, said the minister. Petrovic reminded that Serbia saw shortages of milk towards the end of 2010, while both supply and prices stabilized in 2011. "The basis for this is that the prices of raw milk have stabilized at a point which allows both farmers and companies in this line of work, as well as the dairy industry, to make a profit," the minister said. Petrovic stressed that the increased purchase of milk shows the domestic dairy industry is expanding, despite experiencing some problems. "We have started exporting milk and dairy products to Russia and the EU, we have considerable exports to countries in the region, which means the dairy industry is stronger than it was in 2010," the minister said.
